How Can a Job Personality Test Help? A Real-Life Career Change Story
What do you want to be when you grow up?
It’s a question we’re asked as kids, but for many of us, the answer never comes easily. Some people seem to be born knowing exactly what they’re meant to do. But for others, finding the right career feels like a lifelong experiment.
That was me. Maybe it’s you too?
For years, I moved through different career paths—not because I knew where I was going, but because I had to pick something. And like many people, I made choices based on what seemed logical, what made others happy, or what simply came next.
If I had known back then that there were tools that could help match my interests and personality to careers I’d actually enjoy, I wonder how different things might have been.
Falling Into Careers Without a Plan
I was definitely not one of those people who had a clear vision of their future.
In high school, I loved math and science but also thrived in psychology, writing, and literature. I even competed in math and physics leagues, winning awards. At the same time, my writing skills set me apart—I aced every essay exam, no matter the subject, and even earned a scholarship for something I had written.
But when it came time to choose a career, I didn’t follow my own instincts—I followed what I thought would make other people happy.
Engineering seemed like the right choice. It was prestigious, it made my father proud, and I was good at it. But as I sat in classrooms full of formulas and technical theory, something felt off. I was excelling, but I couldn't picture myself doing this for the rest of my life.
After one semester, I switched my major to psychology. Not because I had a plan—but because it felt useful, flexible, and interesting. If I didn’t know where I was going, at least psychology could take me anywhere.
Have you ever made a career choice because it felt like the "right" thing to do—but deep down, you weren’t sure?
Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to find something that actually fits who you are?
You’re not alone.
I didn’t figure it out then, and if you’re feeling lost now, you’re not too late either.
Finding My Passion—And Then Losing It
That "anywhere" turned out to be a youth shelter, where I worked as a counselor during my senior year of college. This. Was. IT!
Helping kids, making an impact, changing lives.
I poured everything into that path—working my way up to director of a shelter, supervising teams, and becoming a licensed therapist. I earned my Master’s in Counseling Psychology and was on the path to becoming a School Psychologist, with the goal of eventually earning my PsyD.
For 25 years, this was my life. My career. My purpose.
And then—I got sick.
For a while, there was no career crisis, because there was no career at all. I was on disability, unable to work, and my focus wasn’t on what I would do next—it was simply on getting through each day.
Eventually (and gratefully), I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease (100% treatable by a restricted diet). I started to heal. And that’s when the real struggle began.
For the second time in my life, I had no direction, no clear path forward. It took two years before I was physically able to return to work—but the career I had spent 25 years building was no longer an option.
Sometimes, life forces a transition we never planned for. An illness, a layoff, a family change—it can take everything we thought we knew about our careers and turn it upside down.
And suddenly, we’re left asking: What now?
The Struggle Between Career and Family
Going back to my old career wasn’t just about my health—many people with Celiac work outside the home. But in my case, working in schools and residential settings meant constant exposure risks. I would have needed to be hypervigilant at all times—washing my hands non-stop, worrying about accidental contamination.
But more than that, my priorities had changed.
For most of my life, I saw myself as a career-driven woman—ambitious, dedicated, and fully committed to my work. But when I got sick, something unexpected happened.
I was forced to slow down. And for the first time, I was truly present at home with my sons.
Before then, I had spent years working with other people’s children while my own son was in childcare. I loved my career, but I had missed so many moments. And now, with a second child, I couldn’t ignore what I had been pushing aside—I wanted to be there.
But the reality wasn’t so simple. Love and presence wouldn’t pay the bills.
This is a struggle so many parents face—especially women, who are often expected to be both fully present at home and fully committed to their careers. But men feel this too—the pressure to provide while also wanting to be more involved in their children’s lives.
I needed a career that fit my new reality—one that gave me both flexibility and financial stability.
And I had no idea what that looked like.
Starting Over—And the Struggle to Find What’s Next
I tried several different jobs, chasing security, trying to make money. Nothing felt right. I felt lost—like I had too many skills and no clear direction. I wanted to help people, but I also loved technology. I wanted to write, but I wanted to use my analytical side too.
I didn’t realize it then, but I was stuck in a mindset of "either/or." I thought I had to choose one thing to define my entire career.
But what if I didn’t have to choose?
I didn’t need to start from scratch—I just needed the right tool to help me see the possibilities.
A Job Personality Test That Changed Everything
In 2012, I came across a Holland Code career personality test.
Ironically, in my work as a therapist, I had been certified in psychological assessments and personality testing—but those were focused on understanding people, not careers. Career testing was never part of my training.
I had taken career tests before, but they always felt limiting—forcing me into one category or another. This test was different.
Instead of trying to fit me into a single box, it showed me how my unique combination of strengths and interests could work together. It wasn’t just about what I was good at—it was about what would make me thrive.
According to Holland's theory, there are six career personality categories:
- Realistic (Doers): You’re hands-on, practical, and love solving problems by working with things you can see and touch—whether it’s building, fixing, or operating.
- Investigative (Thinkers): You’re analytical, curious, and thrive on research, data, and problem-solving—the person who always wants to understand the “why” behind things.
- Artistic (Creators): You see the world differently, love expressing yourself, and bring ideas to life through creativity—whether through writing, music, design, or other forms of innovation.
- Social (Helpers): You feel most fulfilled when you’re guiding, teaching, or supporting others—the person people turn to for advice or encouragement.
- Enterprising (Persuaders): You’re a natural leader who loves taking initiative, thinking strategically, and turning ideas into action. Whether in business or big-picture decision-making, you thrive when making things happen.
- Conventional (Organizers): You excel at structure, organization, and efficiency—the one who keeps everything running smoothly and makes sure the details don’t get lost.
But most people don’t fit neatly into just one category.
That’s what makes the Holland Job Personality Test different—it recognizes that we’re a combination of strengths, not just a single label. The test assigns a three-letter code that reflects your dominant work personality types, helping you see how your unique mix translates into real-world careers.
That’s what finally clicked for me.
Seeing My Career Path in a New Light
My results? SIE – Social, Investigative, Enterprising.
For the first time, I saw a career path that reflected everything I had loved in different stages of my life. I started as a freelance writer. Within a few years, I was leading teams of writers, managing content, and building a career that gave me everything I needed.
And now?
I work full-time as the Content Project Manager for BrainManager—a role that brings together everything I’ve learned, everything I love, and everything I’m passionate about.
But my path didn’t just lead me to a new career—it led me to a new focus. After spending years working with children and teens, I found myself doing work that helps adults in personal development. And for me, that still connects to my core passion—because when we grow as adults, we become better parents and better role models, and ultimately, that helps the next generation.
That’s why I’m here now—writing this for you.
I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel when you’re searching for what’s next.
